The Hill House in Gloucestershire Won This Year’s RIBA House of the Year

The Hill House in Gloucestershire

The winning home was created by the famous Alison Brooks Architects. It has a black annex and a special gallery. The extension includes the home's kitchen, dining room, and living area. Such a special design mushed up the old with the new.

The creation of the establishment for an art-collecting couple, David and Jenny Clifford, took over 10 years. The studio refurbished a farmhouse and added a corner two-story annex. Spaces have been created throughout the house to show the artwork. The main property is a staircase designed as a mini craft gallery that holds 100 pieces. And even though the home met all the requirements, it received only a D-level, the second-highest, energy performance certificate.

House of the Year 2021 by RIBA

This was revealed in exploration by the British studio Hawkes Architecture. Only one of all projects included in the list of nominees for the award achieved the highest degree of stability. Also, the interesting fact is that earlier the home had another name- Windward House.

Would like to note that such an award is the most objective choice - not from the number of works submitted by the authors, but from all those built in a year. Not only the artistic worthies of the project are considered but also the quality of its implementation. Therefore, the Prize is awarded not only to the architects but also to builders and developers who have brought the project to life.
