The kitchen has been renovated, the dining table and kitchen set have been selected. Now the matter remains with the details and the final touches, without which the room cannot become harmonious and maximally resistant to splashes, constant exposure to moisture, and temperature extremes. One such detail is the shiplap backsplash for the countertop. Often it comes in a set with a kitchen set, but if you made furniture to order or just decided to refresh the existing set, the question of choice will sooner or later become relevant. We offer you to understand the main types of baguettes for countertops and decide how to install a shiplap kitchen.

Shiplap Kitchen Backsplash Functions

Shiplap kitchens are similar in structure and appearance to a floor counterpart. They cover the joint between the countertop and the wall (kitchen apron). Why is this necessary? For a number of reasons, the kitchen skirting board takes on a lot of functions:

  • Protection of the joint between the countertop and the wall from the ingress of crumbs, splashes, and debris. Even if all surfaces are perfectly flat, there may be a small gap between the kitchen unit and the wall. In most kitchens, deviations from ideal horizontals and verticals are significant, so gaps can form very noticeable. Debris and moisture particles that will certainly fall into the gap, in favorable kitchen conditions, will quickly become a place for the development of mold and mildew. Not only is it unhygienic, but the smell will also be terrible;
  • Wood plank kitchen backsplash (the ones that are the cheapest, which is why they have become popular) is very sensitive to moisture. To be more precise, moisture acts destructively on such a countertop, which gets on the unprotected end. If it is hermetically covered with a plinth, then even the cheapest countertop will last long enough;
  • The kitchen skirting board perfectly hides all defects that are associated with uneven walls. The gaps between the kitchen unit and the wall can be significant, and with uneven walls, the size of the gap can vary markedly in different parts. The molding will help to neatly hide this flaw;
  • a correctly chosen plinth decorates the kitchen, makes the interior more harmonious and complete;
  • almost all kitchen skirting boards have a place for laying an electric cable, and the appearance of the shiplap kitchen wall will only benefit from the fact that at least some wires are masked.

From all this, it is clear that the shiplap backsplash kitchen is an important detail, the choice of which must be paid attention to.

Types of Moldings for Kitchen Countertops

Sometimes behind the stove wall covering skirting board comes complete with a ready-made set, and then you just have to install it in place. If not, you will have to go to the store and choose a tabletop molding that matches your headset and kitchen accessories in appearance and material.

Plastic Kitchen Plank Backsplash

Plastic kitchen Hardie plank shiplap is made of polyvinyl chloride. Co-extrusion, which the profiles are subjected to after forming, makes it possible to give their surface any color and pattern.

Plastic kitchen profiles are quite elastic, which means they can repeat small errors in the geometry of the walls. The price of the finishing material is relatively low, and its installation on the countertop does not require much time and effort. The negative point is that installing it next to the built-in hob is undesirable since PVC does not tolerate high temperatures very well. But as a molding for the sink box, plastic would be an excellent option.

Aluminum Profile for Tabletop

The next most popular after the plastic one is the aluminum skirting board for the waterproof shiplap countertop. It will cost a little more than PVC molding, but it will show itself better in operation. Aluminum will serve for a very long time, it will be easy to clean from contamination. In addition, the metal molding is heat-resistant, unlike plastic, and can be installed near heating surfaces.

Aluminum kitchen skirting boards are available in different versions and with different types of coatings. The outer surface of this molding can be plain, embossed, or polished aluminum, with or without a replaceable color finish.

Artificial Stone and Marble Kitchen Skirting Boards

This backsplash behind the sink is called attachment moldings, as they are mounted vertically as if leaning against the wall. They are made from the same materials as the countertops. The installation of such molding is carried out on glue, the same one that is used during the sealing of the joints of the tabletop parts: the sealing of the seams, in the end, turns out to be very good.

Stone kitchen skirting boards have a long service life and excellent appearance, they are not afraid of heating. This molding also has disadvantages: a marble or stone baseboard for a countertop does not bend at all, and therefore requires perfect alignment of the wall to which it will adjoin; high, in comparison with plastic or aluminum, the price.

The Principle of Choosing a Kitchen Skirting Board for Countertops

The choice of moldings for kitchen countertops is based on two parameters:

  • Technical characteristics - conformity of the width of the plinth to the size of the gap between the wall and the countertop, the presence or absence of heating appliances in the immediate vicinity.
  • Taking into account the style in which the kitchen set is made, as well as the type of accessories that are located near the molding. So, if you have roof rails installed under the hanging boxes, then it makes sense to choose a plinth that is similar in appearance to them.

Installation of Skirting Boards for Shiplap Kitchen Cabinets

planked backsplash

In principle, the installation methods for wood backsplash behind stove moldings are very similar. Roughly speaking, first fix the mounting rail, and then snap the outer part of the skirting board onto it. The rail will be plastic in all cases, but its shape, like the shape of the kitchen skirting board itself, may differ.

Installing a Kitchen Skirting Board for Countertops

Now let's talk about the installation of the planked backsplash itself. As mentioned above, the installation of aluminum and plastic profiles is almost the same. Therefore, a description of the backsplash behind the kitchen sink of a skirting board for a worktop will be given on the example of a PVC profile.

The first thing we need to do is cut the mounting rail and the outer part. To do this, you can use a hacksaw for metal. Now, using self-tapping screws (16 mm) and a screwdriver, we attach the mounting rail to the tabletop. Next, insert the inner and outer corners into place and snap the outer part of the molding onto the rail. We close the ends with caps for the plinth.

And one more important point. The design of almost all types of backsplash above the sink for worktops allows you to lay wires in the mounting rail in the same way as in the cable channels for floor skirting boards. Therefore, if necessary, you can do this before putting the decorative part in place.
